The
tradition of Bomboniere
There
is a long-standing tradition in Europe where
guests were thanked for sharing a special
occasion by offering a bomboniera (favor)
to each person or each family.
Sugared
almonds (confetti) are used as part of the
bomboniera and are presented to each person
or family along with a special gift. Special
or more significant bomboniere can be given
to family members and friends who have played
a special role in the celebrations (mother
of the bride/groom, godparents, flower girls,
bridesmaids etc.)
They
traditionally contain an odd number of almonds
and therefore five or three confetti are
included in the bomboniera. This represents
health, wealth, fertility, happiness and
longevity, and many also believe that they
signify the strength of the Lord, keeping
the Bride and Groom together forever. A
bigliettino (little tag) or imported favor
ribbon is attached with the date of the
event along with the names.
As
the tradition goes, the Bride and Groom
will take time to go around after the reception
(the Groom carrying the gifts and the Bride
passing them out). The bomboniere serve
as both a "thank you" and as a
keepsake. Bomboniere are also sent to those
who were unable to attend the celebration.
